The watch case

The case of the watch can be made of a variety of materials including plastic, steel, stainless steel, and even gold, silver, or titanium. Obviously, the type of case material can add dramatically to the cost of a watch.

The crystal

The crystal inside a watchThe crystal of a watch is usually either acrylic, mineral glass, or synthetic sapphire, in increasing order of hardness and cost. Acrylic crystal is an inexpensive form of plastic that does scratch easily, but the scratches can be buffed out.

Mineral glass is composed of several elements that do resist scratches somewhat. Scratches cannot be easily buffed out. Synthetic sapphire is three times harder than mineral crystals and 20 times harder than acrylic ones.

To produce synthetic sapphires, a tiny seed of genuine sapphire is dipped into molten aluminum oxide and slowly (at a rate of 100 mm per hour) drawn out, producing lumps of synthetic sapphire of up to 200 kg in mass. For making watch crystals and windows, the chunks, called boules, are grown is a specific orientation so that the result, when polished, is crystal clear optical class. The extreme hardness of sapphire makes these crystals highly scratch resistant and the most expensive.

Watches are rated for pressure, not depth. A 5 ATM rating would mean it could survive up to about 165 feet (50 meters). That is suitable only for swimming in shallow, not deep, water.
